Dr. Kusumi provides more pain therapy choices at Memorial

Pain Management Specialist Tonia Kusumi MD performs pain procedures every Friday at Memorial Hospital. Here she prepares for one of many cases in the treatment room in the surgery area.

Pain Management physician Tonia Kusumi MD now offers two more advanced pain therapies at Memorial Hospital – Intrathecal Pain Pump and Spinal Cord Stimulation. “It’s an important service for those who need more advanced pain management therapy,” explained Dr. Kusumi. “I use the intrathecal pain pumps primarily for cancer patients. Spinal cord stimulation is effective for many pain conditions, especially RSD.”

Intrathecal Pain Pump – In this drug delivery system, a pump is placed in an abdominal “pocket,” and a catheter is inserted into the intrathecal space of the spine and connected to the pump under the skin. Medicine can be delivered at constant or variable flow rates. The pain pump may reduce the risk of infection, and because there are no external parts, does not restrict daily activities.

Spinal Cord Stimulation – This therapy uses electrical impulses to relieve chronic pain of the back, arms and legs by preventing pain signals from being received by the brain. One or more insulated wire leads are inserted into the space surrounding the spinal cord and a battery pack is positioned beneath the skin. An external control unit is used to program the delivery of the electrical pulses.
