Memorial Hospital Foundation receives
grant for breast health education to high school freshmen
|
|
To provide education on breast health
in partnership with the Ruth Lily Health Education Center in
Indianapolis, Memorial Hospital Foundation has received a
grant to present BSE: It’s Up to You! to
approximately 300 freshmen women at Cass County High
Schools. This project is supported by a grant from the
Northern Indiana Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for
the Cure. Through participation in this interactive program
scheduled in April and May at participating Cass County
schools, the students will learn the value of monthly breast
self-exams and the importance of performing the exams
properly.
Health education is a key strategic initiative
of the Logansport Memorial Hospital Foundation and
Logansport Memorial Hospital. Breast cancer is the second
most common cancer among women, and the second leading cause
of cancer deaths in Indiana. More than 1 in 4 cancers
diagnosed in US women is related to breast cancer. The death
rate from breast cancer has decreased since 1990 due to both
improvements in breast cancer treatment and to early
detection. At this time, there is no guaranteed way to
prevent breast cancer. A woman’s best overall preventative
health strategy is to reduce her known risk factors as much
as possible. BSE: It’s Up to You! will inform high
school freshmen about the potential benefits associated with
breast self-exams. |
