What you need to know about COVID-19

Coronaviruses are a family of viruses that can cause illnesses such as the common cold, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS). Read more about common coronaviruses from the CDC.

In 2019, a new coronavirus was identified as the cause of a disease outbreak in China. The disease it causes is called Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

Symptoms of COVID-19 include:

  • Fever
  • Cough (new or changed in the last 14 days)
  • Shortness of breath may develop within 14 days of exposure

Only designated lab tests can diagnose the virus, using a collected specimen from the inside of your nose. Please do not try using the lab tests from home.
