Bone density scans can establish a baseline assessment of bone health and provide a method for future monitoring of bone density changes. In a bone density test, x-rays measure how many grams of calcium and other bone minerals are packed into a segment of bone.

Logansport Memorial boasts the newest technology available in bone density scans with its GE Lunar DEXA, which is housed adjacent to the Breast Center in Medical Imaging. This location is very convenient for women since 95% of bone studies are ordered for women, and it is common to get a mammogram and a bone density study on the same visit.

After the doctor's order for the test, it is administered and reviewed by a radiologist. Based on the results, the physician and the patient decide on the most beneficial treatment plan options to slow the condition. It may be as simple as making behavior and lifestyle changes, or it may require necessary medications that have been developed specifically for treating osteoporosis and bone density loss.

Think you may be at risk for osteoporosis and have never been tested? Talk with your physician about making a date with DEXA to examine and monitor your bone health or contact our Medical Imaging Department.
